The Second Agreement - Don't Take Anything Personally

The Four Agreements: Part 2/4 🚨

The Second Agreement: Don’t Take Anything Personally

RUIZ’S DEFINITION

“Nothing others do is because of you.  What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream.  When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering” “Using an earlier example, if I see you on the street and I say, “Hey, you are so stupid,” without knowing that it’s not about you; it’s about me….If you can make this second agreement a habit you will find that nothing cna put you back into Hell.  There is a huge amount of freedom that comes to you when you take nothing personally. You become immune to black magicians, and no spell can affect you regardless of how strong it may be. The whole world can gossip about you, and if you don’t take it personally you are immune.  Someone can intentionally send emotional poison, and if you don’t take it personally, you will not eat it. When you don’t take the emotional poison, it becomes even worse in the sender, but not in you.”

MY TRANSLATION:

This agreement is definitely easier said than done.  We know the adage ‘Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, but let’s be honest.  Words can hurt. Words may stick with us for days, weeks, months, or years. The saying that we really want to radiate is “I’m rubber, you’re glue.  Whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you”. The ‘immunity’ Don Miguel Ruiz writes about come from a strong sense of self. It may come off as “arrogance” or that “you do not care”. If you know who YOU are, it makes it difficult for anyone else to come along and tell you.
